Frequently Asked Questions
Whether it’s your first time buying a beef share or you just want to understand how the process works, here are the answers to the questions we get most often from families across the Midwest.
-
Buying a beef share means purchasing a portion of a cow directly from a local rancher — usually a quarter, half, or whole. You’ll receive a variety of steaks, roasts, and ground beef, all processed to your specifications.
-
Quarter Beef: ~100–125 lbs
Half Beef: ~200–250 lbs
Whole Beef: ~400–500 lbs
Actual weights vary slightly depending on the animal and processing. -
Most shares take about 90 days after matching with a rancher to pickup, depending on the rancher’s finishing schedule and processor availability.
-
You’ll pick up your order directly from the processor your rancher works with — typically the same part of the Midwest as the rancher. Some proccesors offer delivery for an additional fee. Contact us directly if you need additional assistance with receiving your beef.
-
Plan on about 1 cubic foot of freezer space per 25–30 lbs of beef.
That’s roughly:5 cubic feet for a quarter
8–10 for a half
16–20 for a whole

When you reserve a beef share through Heartland Beef Connection, there are two parts to the payment:
Match Fee (Paid to Us) — A one-time $100 fee that covers your personalized rancher match and guidance through the process.
Beef & Processing (Paid Directly to the Rancher and Processor) — After we connect you, you’ll work directly with the rancher to pay for your share of beef and any processing costs.
We’ll make sure all details are clear up front, so there are no surprises — just a simple, honest way to buy beef directly from Midwest ranchers.
